His father K.Rathnam worked as a driver in Pallavan Transport Corporation, Chennai. His mother K.Sulochana is a housewife. He has two sisters Geetha and Malliga. He had his schooling in Government School, Saidapet. During his school days, he won a medal for his performance in the stage drama. He completed M.A., M. Phil. in history with a topic related on Tamil Cinema. He joined Thamizisai College, Annamalai Mandram where he learnt violin and got his diploma as \"Isai Selvam\" in 1977. He initially worked in a nail factory for a salary of Rs.75. He joined writer Thooyavan as an office assistant, where he met director K. Bhagyaraj and later joined him as an assistant director. He became his Associate director in the film Darling Darling Darling, and worked with him till the story discussion of the film Mundanai Mudichu.
