He was working as an assistant director to his mentor Bharathiraja in 16 Vayathinile shot at Kollegal in Karnataka. The occasion threw up the need for someone to play the role of a doctor. After trying out various aspirants, the director finally decided that Bhagyaraj should don the greasepaint. His first love was, however, filmmaking. Even for the film Suvarila Chitirangal, he was not interested in playing the lead role. It so happened that the contracted actor backed out at the eleventh hour. The transition from an assistant to a full-fledged director was a big step to take and he debuted with Suvarila Chitirangal. The roles gave him a lot of confidence. Bharathiraaja was convinced that he could act well. So, he cast him in the lead role in Pudhiya Vaarpugal. From then there was no turning back. There is a problem of villainy in the life of the protagonist and People liked him for it. He made a mark with a series of films in the 1980s. In recent times, the failure of his films likes Gnana Pazham, Vaettiya Madichi Kattu and Sokka Thangam forced him to retire. He made a tentative entry into television and the success buoyed him to make a comeback in films. His comeback film in 2006, Parijatham with his daughter in the main lead, was an effort well-received in the cinemas. Many of his films were also remade in Hindi in the 80s.
