He did B.A. Painting in Government College of Arts and Crafts, Chennai. His father died when he was a child. After the completion of his painting course, he switched his career to acting. He married Lakshmi. They have three Children. Sons Surya Sarvanan Sivakumar, Karthik Sivakumar and a daughter Bridha Shivakumar. His sons are also popular film actors. His daughter-in-law Mrs. Jyothika Surya is also a film actress. He made his debut in the Tamil film Motor Sundaram Pillai through S.S.Vasan. He captivated the audience with his natural performance on the silver screen. His earlier films Annakilli, Rosappoo Ravikaikari, Bathrakali, and Aatukkara Alamelu proved his acting skills. He acted with yester year super stars M.G.R. and Sivaji Ganesan in films Idhaya Veenai, Uyarndha Manithan, Kanthan Karunai, Thirumal Perumai, etc. His memorable hits are Sidhu Bairavi, Vandichakaram, Oruvar Vaazhum Aalayam, Ini Oru Suthanthiram, Pournami Alaigal, Solla Than Ninaikiraen, Manithanin Marupakkam, etc. He is known for his evergreen Appearance, Self discipline, and Humility. He has performed nearly 750 times in various prominent roles in dramas and stages across all over India. He is a modest disciplinarian for which the entire world looks upon him with respect. He is not only known for his versatility in acting but for his paintings of Bhradeeswara Temple, Meenakshi Temple, Thirumalai Naicker Mahal and Mahatama Gandhi. His work Idhu Rajapathai Alla, a widely acknowledged book was included in the 91- 92 curriculum of Loyola College, Chennai. The book contains more than 50 paintings of Sivakumar. At anytime he could recite the verses of Tamil poet Bharathiar and poems of Sangam literature with flair and ease. Apart from his artistic skills, he is the founder of Sri Sivakumar Educational and Charitable Trust, which supports the education of the poor children. He also supports the Agaram Foundation started by his son Actor Surya Sivakumar. He received Best Actor Award for film Vandichakaram from Tamil Nadu Government. He received prestigious Kalimamani Award in 2005. He received Life Time Achievement Award in 2007 from Filmfare Award.
