Biography:
Dr. Chevalier Shivaji Ganesan alias Chinnaiah Pillai, was born on 1st October 1927 in Villupuram, Tamil Nadu. His father Mr.Chinnaiah Mandraayer was a freedom fighter. His mother Mrs.Rajamani Ammal was a housewife. He studied up to 3rd Standard. At nine years, he ran away from home to pursue his career in acting. He joined a drama troupe and became a stage actor. The title Sivaji was given by the great rationalist Thanthai Periyar for his best performance in the stage play Sivaji Kanda Indu Saamrajyam in 1946. He married Miss. Kamala and has two sons Ramkumar, Prabhu (actor) and two daughters Thenmozhi and Shanthi. His son Ramkumar looks after his production company Sivaji Films. A film of social and Revolutionary themes, Parasasthi was his debut in 1952. It was a great turning point to his career. His meritorious qualities include Modesty, Punctuality, Make-up aptness, Infinite variety in acting, Dialogue delivery, and Work commitment. He brought fresh lease of life again to historical characters, which he performed in big screen. An acting career with more than 300 films, he had portrayed all types of characters from a prince to a beggar and a rugged character to a cultured Elite!. He was conferred the title Nadigar Tilakam, a precious jewel on his crown. During his U.S.A. visit in 1995, he was given the highest honor of being the mayor of Columbus city for one day. After Prime Minister Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru he was the only Indian to get this honor. This legend of cinema came to an end on 21st July 2001 due to heart ailment.
He was bestowed with memorable awards like Padmashri Award, Padmabhusan Award, Special Jury Award, Adhithanar Gold Medal Award, Santhome Special Award, For the Sake of Honor Award, Kalaimamani Award, and Dadasaheb Palke Award. He received the Chevalier Award from Government of France. He received the Doctorate from Annamalai University, Chidambaram and the Best Actor Award from Afro-Asian film Festival in 1960.
